Traditional and old fashioned songs, dances and tunes in mid-Kent

It’s summertime…

May 15, 2015 admin Leave a comment

So the Frittenden sessions are having a rest, though the tunes and song workshops on the second and fourth Wednesdays continue for now, and the first Sunday tunes sessions at Horsmonden continue.

Have a great summer of music, and the Frittenden sessions will be back in September!

Upcoming events

March sees a session at the Gun, Horsmonden on the first Sunday at 8pm, tunes workshops at 8pm on the first and third Tuesdays. The barndance - see the poster left - is on the evening of the 24th at 8pm, and talented singer and songwriter Helen North is our guest at our informal and free pub session at The Castle Inn, Brenchley at 8 pm on the 25th March from 8pm. Our visiting guest at 8pm at the Castle Inn session on Sunday 29th April is one of our occasional big names - Nick Dow. Nick's a fabulous singer, a great guitarist and knows a lot of wonderful old songs, often in interesting versions. These sessions are always great, friendly affairs, but this is one not to miss.

Sentimental Journey cover
Sentimental Journey is the nostalgia-laden new CD from Julie and Gavin Atkin, featuring 19 tracks of old fashioned songs from Julie, accompanied by Gavin's duet concertina and melodeon.
It's perfect for Christmas, and just the thing to play on a traditional boat from the middle years of the last century!

What is English traditional music?

England can easily match any other country for the richness and diversity of its traditional dances... So, if there's all this wonderful stuff lying around, why aren't we more aware of it as an everyday part of our national culture? Why aren't we all doing it, and valuing it, and treasuring it? ... it is, or was, mostly done, and valued, and treasured in the country... preserved most tenaciously by the least privileged layers of society... because even if there's little in the way of material wealth or worldly possessions, at least you know who you are... '

Leading box player, singer and dancer John Kirkpatrick explains here.
